Graphics Whores

Graphics whores are a shame to the industry. You know who they are. These people think that graphics are the most important part of a game and often insult great games because of sub-par graphics. This is inexcusable, as any true gamer knows that graphics mean nothing in the overall scheme of things. Let me put it in more understandable terms. I’m going to equate the game play to a woman’s personality and the graphics to, what else, her looks. Graphics whores are those shallow people that see nothing beyond the looks of a woman. Real gamers realize that the personality is the most important aspect. Yes, good graphics are nice, but they are just icing on the cake.

I think I know why there are so many graphics whores out there. The gaming industry is in its 30s now, and there are many people that only joined the gaming scene during the era of the Nintendo 64 and Playstation. These people weren’t around for the early days of the industry when people cared about game play. Back then, there was no such thing as “realistic graphics.” The games were basically a bunch of pixels moving around the screen. People played games because they were fun, not because they looked good. Now that there are such amazingly realistic graphics and games are getting more and more complex, people have forgotten about the heyday of gaming, when game play was king and graphics were the court jester.

Graphics whores need to rectify their mistakes and start taking interest in the game play, or we may soon face another crash of the industry. See, graphics can only get so realistic. There will be a point when we won’t be able to advance graphics anymore. If this current trend of increasing the quality of graphics, while decreasing the quality of game play continues, when we finally achieve those highly sought after near perfect graphics, there is a good chance that game play will have declined to the point where there true gamers bow out. And when we can no longer improve graphics, those graphics whores will have nothing to look forward to, and they will also bow out of the gaming scene. That is what the future holds, or at least I think so.

So, if the most important thing to you is how good something looks, do the game industry a favor. Go pick up a copy of Playboy so you can ogle some airbrushed wonders, and leave us real gamers alone.
